With glorious weather predicted for most of the weekend there was only one place to be on Saturday and that was Ramsgate Cemetary.Arriving just before midday there was the usual Kent Birders on site and within seconds the bird was whizzing from branch to branch and tree to tree.In a two and half session many pictures were taken and I was pleased with the top one.On Sunday I spent an hour chasing round the male Black Redstart at the port and despite some good views it was extremely difficult to photograph so I settled for a friendly Shag in the harbour.<br />

In very gloomy conditions I managed to find the Snow Bunting flock that Chris Gibbard found yesterday.I reckon there are 40+ birds which is certainly the most I've seen in Kent.Above are two very dodgy pictures which were taken at about 3.45.If you get a chance go and see them they really are great little birds.I caught up with them on the beach and the dunes area underneath the pumping station. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-68263047139412377262013-12-29T21:29:00.001+00:002013-12-29T21:29:26.413+00:00PURPLE SANDPIPERS AT HAMPTON...HERNE BAY.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With the best chance of sunshine for a week I hoped to photograph some Purple Sandpipers which had been at Hampton Pier in Herne Bay for a while.Having seen some pictures by Marc I hoped to emulate them. However having seen a Caspian Gull fest down at Dunge I tried to persuade Heathy that a trip would be in order particularly if Mick Southcott could pick them out for us in the1000s present. Unfortunately Marc only had an hour so we arrived in glorious sunshine and soon found them feeding on the shoreline. It was tricky lighting but we managed some decent pictures.Although there had been 3 birds recorded it soon became 4.The forecast looks shocking for the week so the lads who made it to the Guilli. and the Diver did well today. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-22667496221610085902013-12-08T20:24:00.002+00:002013-12-08T20:24:35.400+00:00BEWICK'S ON TOUR<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Saturday was dull and gloomy and expectations weren't too high, with very little seen at Reculver during the week except a few wandering Snow Bunts. and 3 Bewick Swans.Marc and myself managed to pick out the Bewick's in the gloom from the seawall whilst grazing at Brook. The stroll to Cold Harbour and back was very uneventful except for a Merlin followed by a Kestrel followed by a Marsh Harrier.Sounds a bit like an Aldi ad for a 3 bird roast. On our return we tried to refind a dual ringed Rock Pipit but only managed some pics of a naked mate.A drive round to Brook a least allowed me to point my camera at the adut Bewick'sThe Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-37851345885028297732013-11-10T12:17:00.002+00:002013-11-10T12:17:28.855+00:00POMS. With high hopes of something special Marc and myself had most of a glorious sunny day last week to find something special at Reculver.Unfortunately all we found were Sandwich Terns and a reasonably smart Common Gull. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-90241293808573275622013-10-27T18:41:00.002+00:002013-10-27T18:41:13.153+00:00SOME ADDITIONAL PALLID PICS.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you may well imagine today even a fairly stationary Swift was difficult for me to get a reasonable picture of and I'm sure there will be some outstanding images from today, but a massive thanks to Martyn Wilson who sent me these pictures from this morning for my blog.Although, I was standing next to Martyn mine don't look like this. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-75062955672723260142013-10-27T18:17:00.001+00:002013-10-27T18:17:14.805+00:00PALLID SWIFT AT FORENESS POINT<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It felt like a good morning to be out today and with yesterday's Pallid Swift at Foreness I hoped that another would arrive today or maybe a Red-Rumped in with the Swallows or even a Desert Wheatear bouncing around on the pitch and putt that was.A good start to the morning came in the form of the first tweet from Barry was a Woodlark over and I was soon at Foreness just before 9.00 a,m.Within five minutes a Swift sp. became a clear Pallid and the rest is history.Alan arrived as did a sprinting Chiddy and Martyn soon behind.Over the next hour we were treated to some spectacular views of a "Lifer" for Martyn, Mark and myself. At one stage the bird was only 10 feet over our heads and winked at Martyn.More people were arriving when I left to enjoy this Kent mega. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-71368680243583393122013-10-13T19:56:00.003+01:002013-10-13T19:56:37.700+01:00MORNING AT FORENESS<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You know it's going to be a good session when the first birds you see are 5 Lapland Buntings flying over your head and although there was nothing spectacular on Saturday it was still a great morning in excellent company with a steady flow of good birds.Mark, Barry and Adam had already had 3 Jack Snipe, an excellent record for the area and we managed to re find two of three birds on the pitch and putt. There were fewer Bramblings than earlier in the morning but an interesting Wheatear with a massive bill and a strange Reed Bunting added to the conversation.A flock of twenty plus Scoter wizzed past and a Redstart in the doctor's surgery completed a good morning had by all.Oh, nearly forgot the grass was carpeted with Redwings. Two weeks now with a decent picture! The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-5187645217627289262013-10-06T20:51:00.003+01:002013-10-06T20:51:47.808+01:00TWO SHADES OF GREY FORTY EIGHT TO GO!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's always good to have a rare bird on your doorstep and Friday's late news that Dylan had found a Great Grey Shrike in the field behind my house was welcome news. After breakfast a gentle stroll across the field and five minutes later I had the Great Grey on the wires.Unfortunately a Peregrine found some breakfast in the field and the Shrike headed for cover. It was extremely flighty and a little overcast so I decided to return in afternoon. The bird was still showing well in brighter conditions and reasonable record shot was obtained. With Gary and Mike finding a very late Lesser Grey on Saturday night I hoped it would remain as it would be a new bird for me and Heathy. With Chidders on site early doors and a confirmed sighting we were soon on our way and viewing the bird by 9.00A.M.It performed magnificently and as we left more and more birders were arriving to view this rare Kent visitor, the first since 1995.Thanks to Mark Chidwick for the photos of the Lesser Grey. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-55662212681177235632013-09-29T20:48:00.001+01:002013-09-29T20:48:43.073+01:00SATURDAY'S CRAKE AND LESSER YELLOWLEGS<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Two posts in a day!Saturday I decided to go and hopefully see the Crake at Oare and the Lesser Yellowlegs at Cliffe. However, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. As Burns rightly observed the ....Crake showed magnificently down to a few metres and then it was a quick dash to Cliffe for the Yellowlegs. Thanks to Gary Howard for the use of the scope.Good day but a bit of route marchThe Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-92038982183185050422013-09-29T18:12:00.001+01:002013-09-29T18:12:31.828+01:00RED BREASTED FLYCATCHER AT RECULVER<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I wasn't planning on a trip out today after a long vigil for the Crake at Oare and a flying visit to Cliffe for the Lesser Yellowlegs yesterday. However, with news of a Two barred Crossbill found by Neil Burt this morning at Challock I hoped that something local might arrive.A few more sightings of Yellow Browed Warblers and then I received Heathy's "Tweet" of a R-B Fly at Reculver.Having added Pec. Sand earlier this year ,the opportunity to add to my Reculver list was too good a chance to miss.Arriving just before 12.30 the bird had not been seen for about 40 minutes. There was a decent gathering of "Kent's Finest" and after a few false alarms the bird flitted onto a dead branch in clear view for a moment and then jumped to the branch above before it disappeared right.Always great to see this rare Kent species and although not as showy as the Dunge bird a few year's back it is always nice to see one.Good to catch up with a few people I haven't seen much of later...and hopefully this heralds the promise of more to come. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-39233298890070429502013-09-08T17:31:00.000+01:002013-09-08T17:31:29.526+01:00DOTTEREL AT BOCKHILL<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Apologies for the lack of posts during the Summer but a lack of birds and the arrival of our first Grandson has meant birding has taken a bit of a back seat. However, it was great to see a Wryneck so close to home the other week and a big thanks to Barry for finding this great little bird. With a Dotterel at Bockhill I thought it was worth the effort to see one of my favourite birds. On arrival it was obvious this was not going to be like the Sandwich Bay bird of a few years ago, which you could almost pick up.It stayed loyal to the middle of the field in the hour I viewed it and the photograph is a record, record shot.I'm sure you'll agree it is similar to a few of Grove's Wilson Phal. shots from a few years back and a couple of Spot. Crakes I've seen.Well done to Tony Morris for getting 200 yards closer to the bird.<br />

This morning and this afternoon I have mostly been chasing a Bee Eater around Stonelees.Arriving this morning just after 10 a.m. the bird had been seen by Martyn and Chidders and then disappeared as Steve and myself arrived on the scene. The next hour and and half aroundc30 birders all had fleeting views of it.I decided to return this afternoon in the hope of better weather and a more active bird.I managed to relocate just in time for the departing Ann and Chris Hindle.I did take some very poor pictures, hence me nicking one of Heathy's.However I am sure the bird and the assembled crowd couldn't believe it was June.Roll on October for some sunshine! The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-80645760773926049662013-05-20T18:04:00.001+01:002013-05-20T18:04:47.568+01:00MONTAGU'S HARRIER AT RECULVER.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After the excitement of Saturday in the Cemetary it was still a very good day yesterday at Reculver.Arriving at Chamber's Wall yesterday in bright sunshine I was looking forward to a display from the long staying Monty's and I was not disappointed.Intially it was fairly distant from the Green Wall but I was fortunate that a Short- Eared Owl decided to play "statues" in a field .Moving on to Brook a few Tufted Duck and a close pair of Marsh Harriers kept Heathy and myself company.Final destination was the Oyster Farm where the bird performed well for about half an hour.A few distant record shots were too poor for the blog, so a big thanks to Heathy for a picture of the bird. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-80641673199266358742013-05-19T20:28:00.004+01:002013-05-19T20:28:53.694+01:00DUSKY THRUSH MARGATE CEMETARY<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well, if anybody told me I'd add to my U.K. list this weekend I'd have laughed at them.My plan was a nice little session at Grove with Martyn and Chidders and a day at the cricket in Canterbury.6.22 A.M. Heathy sent me a message "Dusky Thrush Margate Cemo".Now I've been a lucky man to see a Swainson's on Bryher, two Grey-Cheeked on St. Mary's and the grail of the Ovenbird. But this comes very close to the Ovenbird.I've been reliably informed this is the first twitchable bird since 1959 in Hartlepool! The morning was a bit manic with birders recreating the Benny Hill show by chasing in a big gang around the cemetary. For those of you at the Crested Lark twitch it was very similiar to that! However after an hour I went to St.Lawrence and saw Kent capitulate to Worcs.Returning at 5.30 P.M. it was a bit quieter with about 50 birders on site.Steve Tomlinson was roundly thanked for this incredible find and it was good to see Barry Matlock. We settled down to take a few pictures and the best two are above.Another good day today with the Montagu's Harrier at Reculver and there might even be a couple of picture tomorrow. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-60147795366891361362013-05-11T19:52:00.001+01:002013-05-11T19:52:55.165+01:00CATTLE EGRET AT GROVE<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With showers forecast today and generally cloudy weather it still didn't stop me from a few hours birding at Grove. As you will see birding has been very limited recently with Saturdays taken up with work. With a Cattle Egret and a Spoonbill I thought a trip to the Great Rift Valley was in order.Walking onto the reserve it was good to see my first Swifts of the year.Told you I hadn't been out much.On reaching the Marsh Hide Martyn and Mark were already viewing a very distant Cattle Egret.I would have taken pictures as good as the above given that this bird was about half a mile closer! Not a great deal else was on offer. On leaving the hide 6 Hobbies were in the air with numerous hirundines.A stroll to Harrison's offered very little and the main lake was almost birdless. However, a return tomorrow is on the cards if the Spoonbill returns. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-13004193633250861292013-03-29T17:30:00.000+00:002013-03-29T17:30:22.442+00:00POP GOES THE WEASEL!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It has been an incredibly bleak month all round with atrocious weather conditions and school commitments. This was my first day out in March.Meeting Marc at the Towers at 7.00 a.m. we had planned to stroll down to Coldharbour and wait for news of the Kentish Plover at Swalecliffe. To say the walk was bracing would be an understatement but a Peregrine and 3 Marsh Harriers made it more enjoyable.Inland we found 2 Kingfishers at the Wantsum which was unusual and counted a flock of Golden Plover c120.It was good to see a large group of c300 Starling in the sky.On the return leg we found a Weasel which allowed a few photographs in the gloom and a smart Black Redstart by the Towers which never allowed you very close.Other highlights which made the notebook were11 Bar- Tailed Godwits and 2 Snipe. On to Swalecliffe we spent an hour looking for the K.P. unsuccessfully but added Wheatear and Purple Sandpiper...possibly c50 dogs.A brief return to Reculver added nothing new.Hopefully a few more birds will find their way her in the next two weeks. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-50715559074980170562013-02-17T20:43:00.000+00:002013-02-17T20:43:03.456+00:00TOP TIT TWO AND SIBE CHIFFY<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Yesterday's weather conditions had improved marginally from last week's gloom and I decided on a return visit to the Somme for the Penduline Tit which seems quite happy in the reed mace by the artistic Bittern carving.Arriving at the same time as Steve Ashton a gentle stroll through the Alder Wood and we were faced with c25 birders. All the usual suspects were assembled and there were good views of the bird, but always just too distant for a decent photograph .These were the best I could muster from about 100 attempts. With confirmation of a Siberian Chiffchaff at Reculver I met Marc and Julian Perry at 8.30 a.m. this morning down at West Brook Valley in glorious sunshine in the hope the bird would be feeding .No chance! The mist soon descended and it was grey and cold.In conditions that would have suited Warhorse we eventually located the bird and enjoyed reasonable views, but it was always extremely low to the ground, often in brambles and skulking.Perhaps with insects to feed on in better conditions you might get a decent view and some pictures .In light today, the contrast with the C10-15 Chiffchaffs was striking as it appeared to be almost pencil grey. Thanks to Heathy and Julian for helping me through the mud.A single Woodcock was the other highlight, but no Otters! The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-2840356700906707262013-02-10T18:36:00.001+00:002013-02-10T18:36:28.268+00:00PENDULINE TIT IN THE GLOOM!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With a Penduline Tit showing well at times yesterday I decided to visit Stodmarsh this morning in the hope it would still be showing.Unfortunately the weather conditions were poor with only a few cloudless moments. The bird showed almost continually for the two hours I was there and although many pictures were taken the above were the best I could manage in the gloom. It was good to catch up with Mark and Martyn and the last half an hour was spent in the hide drinking coffee in the rain and watching the white Mallard.By that time rain was falling and with half term only a week away let's hope for a few sunnier moments. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-1570124358854427652013-02-05T21:10:00.001+00:002013-02-05T21:10:42.051+00:00GREAT NORTHERN DIVER RAMSGATE HARBOUR<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With decent weather conditions predicted for Saturday I decided to take a short trip to Ramsgate Harbour for the Great Northern Diver that seems to have taken up residence there. The Harbour Master had relocated from Dover and along with Adam and Barry we spent an enjoyable hour watching and photographing the bird. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-27879873465398892542013-01-27T20:22:00.003+00:002013-01-27T20:22:39.997+00:00FORENESS IN THE SUNSHINE<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Having managed to get out yesterday and connect with the Avocet at Cold Harbour I wanted to go to Foreness for high tide today.Arriving spot on 11.58A.M. I managed to count 21 Purple Sandpipers sitting high on the Pumping Station wall.Barry had 19, the other day and this is certainly the most I've ever seen here.Definitely worth a visit... unfortunately too distant for a photograph and quite dark at the undercliff. I didn't search for the Black Redstart but an hour happily watching the Fulmars and Fieldfare on the fenceless ex Pitch and Putt. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-22278449188226933702013-01-02T20:09:00.001+00:002013-01-02T20:13:12.084+00:00TOP TITS!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Late on parade for New Year's Day ...I arrived at a muddy Reculver hoping for a reasonable start to 2013.Unfortunately, I couldn't find the Bewick's but Heathy had found 3 Waxwings on the Embankment which was a good beginning. Not a lot else to report ...and a decision was made to head for Bossenden Woods to hopefully photograph a few woodland species. The results were very pleasing with the Marsh Tit pictures coming out rather well. The only disappointment was a Nuthatch that refused to play, but a return soon will be on the cards. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004567130508014365.post-80681805474057334952012-12-31T16:28:00.000+00:002012-12-31T16:28:12.723+00:00WHERE'S THE HARBOURMASTER?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It was very surreal yesterday with a trip to Dover Docks and not seeing the Harbourmaster in position!Apparently he had been down earlier in the day to check on any new arrivals. My main reason for the trip was to hopefully photograph a Razorbill which was happily fishing in Wellington Dock. Having seen Chiddy's pics yesterday I thought it worth the visit. Although it was very overcast the bird was incredibly close.Along with the B.T.Diver I only ever see them at great distance at Reculver and I agree with Chiddy that it was fascinating to see a bird like this so close. The Diver put in a brief show and it was time for home. The Broadstairs Birderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17742362945080851087noreply@blogger.com4
